Annabel Lee Music Video

This video attempts to translate into visual terms the complexity of the original song "Annabel Lee" by the cerebral rock band Glass Wave. The song, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's last complete poem, was part of a larger musical collaboration between literary scholars at Stanford University and UCLA who composed original music and lyrics that recast great literary works into the genre of rock. The video conflates Poe's 19th-century aesthetic with the memorial roots of Stanford University. The university was founded in 1891 by Leland and Jane Stanford who built the university in commemoration of their only son Leland Stanford Jr., who died of typhoid fever at the age of fifteen. The entire video is composed of individual photographs, shot with a still camera rather than a video camera. The ambiguous narrative and multivalent symbolism result in a highly readable, open-ended film that complicates the themes of mourning, gender, and memory.
